Installation: Step 1: Remove the seat to allow access to the factory CDI igniter on the utility machine. See Figure 1. The KFX-700 (V-Force) CDI is located on the right frame rail by the rear tire. The Teryx CDI is located under the driver’s seat, inside the electrical box. See Figure 2. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Locate the stock CDI (located under the seat). Disconnect the connectors from the CDI, and remove the CDI. NOTE: If your machine has had a timing offset key installed (aftermarket equipment), then the timing maps need to be adjusted using the optional USB Memory Interface. The CDI is shipped assuming 5 degrees static timing, and increasing this with an offset key without compensating the maps may lead to engine damage. Figure 1: Figure 2: Step 2: Remove the two #4×4-40 screws from the DB44 connector at the front of the CDI. Plug the Copperhead® wiring harness into the DB44 connector, and secure with the two #4×4-40 screws. The screws should be snug, but do not over tighten. Plug connectors from the Copperhead® CDI to their corresponding connector on the chassis wiring harness. The Copperhead® CDI will be mounted 90 degrees (1/4 turn) from the stock position in most applications. This will allow it to sit between the stock mounting tabs on the pan. See Figure 3 for the BF750i installation and Figure 4 for the Teryx installation. Test fit the unit, and mark the necessary mounting holes. The KFX-700 (V-Force) will require holes to be drilled in the frame to mount the CDI

If the headlight bulb burns out, replace it as follows. 1. Remove the headlight unit by re- moving the screws. 2. Disconnect the headlight coupler, and then remove the headlight unit and bulb cover. 1. Headlight bulb holder 3. Remove the headlight bulb holder by turning it counterclockwise, and then remove the defective bulb. EWOOOl19 Headlight bulbs get very hot. Therefore, keep flammable products away from a lit headlight bulb, and do not touch the bulb until it has cooled down. 4. Place a new bulb into position, and then secure it with the bulb holder. 1. Do not touch this area. EC000105 Do not touch the glass part of the headlight bulb to keep it free from oil, otherwise the transparency of the glass, the luminosity of the bulb, and the bulb life will be adversely affected. Thoroughly clean off any dirt and fingerprints on the headlight bulb using a cloth moistened with alcohol or thinner. 5. Install the bulb cover, and then connect the coupler. 6. Install the headlight unit by install- ing the screws. 7. Have a Yamaha dealer adjust the headlight beam if necessary. 6-40 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR 1. Screw (x 2) 1. Always keep the battery charged. Storing a discharged battery can cause permanent battery damage. ● To charge a sealed-type (MF) battery, a special (constant- voltage) battery charger is required. Using a conventional battery charger will damage the battery. If you do not have access to a sealed-type (MF) battery charger, have a Yamaha dealer charge your battery. EAU04076* Replacing the fuses The fuse box, which contains the fuses for the individual circuits, is located under panel D. The fuel injection system fuse box is located under panel D. The main fuse box is also located under panel D, beside the battery. (See page 6-7 for panel removal and installation procedures.) If a fuse is blown, replace it as follows. 1. Turn the key to “OFF” and turn off the electrical circuit in question. 2. Remove the blown fuse, and then install a new fuse of the specified amperage. 1. Fuel injection system fuse 2. When I first started working on bike many years ago, I learned the danger of stripping the heads of Philips screws when removing or installing them on motorcycles. I remember the two worst screws were the casing side-cover aluminum screws and carburetor bowl screws. I think I tried every method of screw removal after they were stripped. Vice grips, better tipped screwdriver, hammer, drill, and other tools were used. One way I learned to remove stripped screws is to re-make the Philips head into a flathead screw. Cutting a slot in the top of the screw and then use a flat-head screwdriver to remove the screw. On some parts this technique can work, other parts and screws it may not. The Philips screws on the bottom of the V-Star carburetor bowls are VERY prone to stripping. In fact, I will not start a carburetor cleaning without new hex head screws to replace the original Philips bowl screws. Replace the bowl screws for yourself if you keep the bike, or for the next rider that will appreciate the hex-head screws when they clean the carburetors. Not many other parts on a V-Star have screws that are prone to stripping. This documentation is to help riders with motorcycle maintenance. Some riders will find themselves with the problem of removing stripped screws. A carburetor cleaning can quickly double in time when you realize the hardest part of the job is removing bowl screws after they strip. And then realizing you do not have the replacement hex-head screws available and must now go to the hardware store.
