INSTALLATION 1. Remove seat according to the instructions in the service manual. 2. Remove the ECM caddy/battery cover by removing two screws. 3. See Figure 1 and Figure 2 for the mounting locations of the brackets. NOTE Some seats may limit the fore/aft mounting location of the backrest bracket. 4. See Figure 3 and Table 1. Remove plastic protective cap and locknut from stud. Leave the small plastic washer in place or the stud plate will fall out. With the backrest mounting bracket tab facing forward, attach the backrest mounting bracket (1) to stud plate with stock locknuts from the stud plate. 5. Tighten locknuts to 5-8 ft-lbs (6.8-10.8 Nm) . 6. Attach the front mounting bracket (6) to the frame cross- member using using two flange screws (8) and flange nuts (7). Tighten screws to 72 in-lbs (8.1 Nm) . 7. Attach the bracket support (2) to the front mounting bracket (6) with screw (8) and nut (7). 8. 9. Install the ECM caddy/battery cover using two screws previously removed and tighten to 6-8 ft-lbs (8.1-10.8 Nm) . 10. Install seat according to service manual instructions. 11. Hold slit between rider and passenger seat open. On rider backrest, compress backrest rods and spring. Insert rods into backrest mounting bracket. Backrest Pad Adjustment 1. Adjust fore/aft position of backrest pad. Use 3/16 inch hex wrench to adjust set screw that is accessible through eyelet opening on rear of pad. If possible, do not remove set screw because it is difficult to install.

INSTALLATION 1. See Figure 1. If necessary, cut the plastic rain seal away from the three pre-cut screw holes (D) in the backrest pad (1) to prevent the plastic from catching in the threads. 2. On motorcycles with Detachable Sissy Bar Upright installed: a. Install three long spacers (3) into the pre-cut holes in the backrest pad. b. Position the backrest pad against the sissy bar upright (A). On motorcycles with Detachable Short Passenger Sissy Bar Upright installed: a. Install three long spacers (3) into the pre-cut holes in the backrest pad. b. Position the backrest pad against the detachable short passenger sissy bar upright (B), inserting the three spacers through the slots in the sissy bar tabs (C). On motorcycles with Luggage installed: a. Install three short spacers (4) into the pre-cut holes in the backrest pad. b. Position the backrest pad against the upright (A). 3. Place the mounting bracket (2) against the spacers, so that the holes of the mounting bracket align with the spacers. NOTE To avoid misalignment and cross threading of the screws, start all three screws into the backrest before tightening. 4. Insert a screw (5) from the kit through one of the spacers, and carefully thread it 4-5 turns into the mating hole in the backrest pad. Repeat with the other two screws. DO NOT tighten a screw until all three screws have been started. NOTE Spacers must seat squarely against the mounting bracket. 5. Once all three screws have been carefully started into the three holes of the backrest pad, tighten the screws to 7-10 in-lbs (0.8-1.1 Nm)

These kits fit 1999 and later XL models, 1996 and later Dyna™ and 1996 and later Softail models (except 2006 FXSTC) equipped with a Medallion Plate-Style Sissy Bar Upright. Will not fit with Backrest Pads that have mounting brackets that match the contour of the sissy bar medallion. Will not fit with sissy bar mounted storage bags INSTALLATION 1. Follow the instructions in the Service Manual to remove the seat. See Figure 1. Remove and retain any existing medallion. Adhesive Mounted Medallion (1): Carefully pry the medallion (1) from the plate. Remove any adhesive residue from the back of the medallion and the sissy bar medallion plate. To avoid contaminating the adhesive backing, place the medallion in an area away from dirt and debris. Push Nut Mounted Medallion (2): Carefully pry the edge of the medallion until the medallion is free of the push nuts. 2. See Figure 2. Remove and retain the screw (1) that secures the backrest pad to the plate. 3. Remove and retain the two screws (2), backrest bracket (3) and backrest pad (4). Install the Light Assembly 1. See Figure 3. Clean the front of the medallion plate (2) with a 50/50 solution of isopropyl alcohol and water. 2. Peel the adhese bracket kit (Part Number 59545-04) and sandwich the light assembly between the bracket frame and the medallion plate. The bracket clamps will fit around the back of the sissyive backing from the adhesive tape located on the light assembly (1). Fit and hold the light assembly to the front of the medallion plate (2). 3. See Figure 6. For 2.55 inch (64.8 mm) center to center mounting hole backrest pads, use th bar arms.

REMOVAL 1. Refer to the owner’s manual and follow the instructions to disarm the security system. To prevent accidental vehicle start-up, which could cause death or serious injury, disconnect negative (-) battery cable before proceeding. For All Models except 2002-2003 Touring and 2003- Later Softail: Refer to the owner’s manual and follow the instructions to disconnect the battery, negative (-) cable first or remove the main fuse. For 2002-2003 Touring and 2003-Later Softail Models: Remove seat following the instructions in the service manual and disconnect the battery, negative (-) cable first. Save seat hardware for installation. INSTALLATION 2002-2006 VRSCA, VRSCB, VRSCD Models 1. Open the seat. 2. See Figure 1. Remove the splash guard (mud flap) nuts. 3. See Figure 2. Lower the mud flap from the installed position and allow it to rest on the rear tire 3. Slide the siren into place on the left side of the electrical caddy so the sounder disc (6) faces out. 4. Refer to the owner’s manual and follow the instructions to install the main fuse. 5. Align the barbed studs on the side cover with the grommets in the frame and push side cover firmly into place. 6. Install the left side saddlebag per the instructions in the owner’s manual. 2003 and later Softail Models EXCEPT FXCW/C 1. Remove the right side saddlebag (if equipped) per the instructions in the owner’s manual. NOTE The siren connector is installed on an electrical panel under the rear fender on all Softail models. The rear of the motorcycle may have to be raised slightly to allow removal of the splash guard. 2. Remove the two bolts at the bottom of the splash guard. Bend the upper right corner of the splash guard toward the rear tire and lift upward to unhook the splash guard from the tab on the rear fork. Remove the siren connector [142B] (2) from the receptacle in the siren mounting area (1) of the electrical panel. 4. See Figure 17. Insert security siren (1) connector [142B] into the siren box receptacle until the connector latches securely. 5. Orient the siren (1) as shown, with the harness connector (2) toward the bottom and the sounder disc (5) facing out. Carefully snap the siren into the electrical panel. 6. Insert the siren harness lead (4) into the harness clip (3) to keep the harness clear of other components. 7. If necessary, secure the connector wiring to the electrical panel wiring with a cable strap (not provided). 8. Hook the slot at the top of the splash guard over the tab on the rear fork and install the guard with the two screws removed earlier. Tighten securely. 9. Install the right side saddlebag (if equipped) per the instructions in the owner’s manual. 10. Refer to the owner’s manual and follow the instructions given to connect the battery cables or install the main fuse

Do not exceed luggage rack weight capacity. Too much weight can cause loss of control, which could result in death or serious injury. (00373a) INSTALLATION Passenger Upright 1. Unscrew the captive screw fastening the seat rear bracket to the fender. 2. Remove the rubber plugs from the three holes in the rear fender where the passenger upright installs. 3. See Figure 2. Fasten the studplate (2) to the fender (A) with the backing plate (3) and three flange locknuts (4). 4. See Figure 1. Fasten the passenger upright (3) to the studplate (1) with three flange locknuts (2). 5. Insert the seat front bracket into the frame, then fasten the seat rear bracket to the fender. NOTE The seat must be temporarily bowed up in the center to fit the seat rear bracket through the slot in the passenger upright. 6. Kit 51144-02 only. See Figure 2. Carefully clean the lower hole (B) on the passenger upright (1) with isopropyl alcohol to remove any grease or dirt. Remove backing from adhesive emblem (5) and press the emblem firmly in to place. INSTALLATION NOTE It is easiest to mount these backrest pads with the sissy bar upright kit already installed. 1. Install the sissy bar upright according to the instructions included with that kit. 2. Hold backrest pad against upright with pad facing forward. 3. See Figure 1. See Figure 2. Begin threading each of the two button head cap screws. Threading these screws may be a little difficult at first since the screw must break through plastic sheeting inside the backrest pad to reach the threaded insert. It may be necessary to use a 4 mm hex wrench, while holding the backrest pad tight against the upright to get the screws started. 5. Using a 4 mm hex wrench (allen wrench), tighten each screw a little at a time, alternating side-to-side. This is done to ensure the vinyl stretches evenly in the recessed channel that the upright bar is drawn into. Continue alternating side-to-side until both screws are secure. 6. Tighten both screws to 50-60 in-lbs (5.6-6.8 Nm)

INSTALLATION Seat Installation NOTE When performing the following procedures, be careful not to scratch painted surfaces (fender, tank, etc.) with the metal tabs on the seat. 1. Remove the existing seat and passenger grab strap following the instructions in the appropriate Service Manual. Discard the grab strap and retain all other hardware for later use. 2. See Figure 9. Remove the seat bracket from the stock seat. 3. For all except FXDWG: Install the stock seat bracket onto the new seat with the stock screws. For FXDWG: Install new seat bracket 52152-97 onto the new seat with the stock screws. For models equipped with original or accessory two- up seating: Proceed to Step 6. 4. On models equipped with an accessory Solo Seat: Remove the plastic plug from the hole in the rear fender where the rear seat bracket will be attached. 5. See Figure 9. Slide the retention nut (9) onto the cable strap (11) so the wide end of the nut rests on the eye of the strap. Thread the cable strap up under the fender and through the fender hole. Pull up on the cable strap to hold the nut snug against the underside of the fender. Seat the rib of the retention nut in the notch in the fender hole and slide the retention washer (10) into place from the rear. This will lock the retention nut in place. 6. See Figure 1. Place the black bracket (1) from the kit onto the frame as shown. 7. See Figure 9. Install the new grab strap (8) in the original location with the hardware saved in Step 1. Tighten the nut to 96 in-lbs (10.85 Nm) . 8. See Figure 1. Install the screw (2) in the hole on the forward edge of the bracket. Attach the locknut (3) and washer (4) from under the frame. Tighten to 96 in-lbs (10.85 Nm)

INSTALLATION 1. See Figure 1. If not already assembled in package, assemble V-logo onto each mounting bracket (2 and 3) using #4-40 thread-forming screws (5). 2. Position luggage rack between sideplates of detachable passenger backrest assembly. 3. Thread button head screws (7) through washers (6), then through holes in luggage rack support and passenger backrest sideplate and into mounting brackets (2 and 3). Apply LOCTITE 243 (Blue) to screws (7) before installation. Finger tighten. 4. Tighten button head screws to 19 ft-lbs (26 Nm) .
