Unpacking your Cobra Installing the front shock Installing the front tires Installing rear shocks Installing the rear tires Installing seats and harnesses Steering wheel installation Roll cage installation Safety checks / Adjustments General maintenance Unpacking your Cobra First off you should pull the carton off from your new 250 Cobra cart. Inspect the cart thoroughly to make sure that your new Cobra has not been heavily damaged. You will notice that the product has a metal frame holding it in place; you may want to start removing bolts from the shipping steel frame. The next step is to remove the metal frame and lift it off of the cart. Remove any of the metal frame that may afford resistance when working on the cart it self. Be careful the metal frame may be heavy and sharp. Now would also be a good time to inspect your Cobra a little more thoroughly. In the box with the Cobra you should have found a box containing miscellaneous hardware. Installing the front shock Using some of the bolts you found in your box, install the front shocks sliding the bolt through the brackets and tighten the nut down. Next, you will need to place the ball head into the turning arm, then tighten the castle nut and insert a cotter pin so that the castle nut doesn’t loosen and become a hazard. Installing the front tires
Find the front tires and place them on the front hub and place the lug nuts on the studs. Tighten them down. Make sure that all of the lug nuts are on tightly. Installing the rear shocks Moving to the rear of the Cobra you will notice the rear shocks are not inserted. Place the rear shocks into the bracket on the rear of the Cobra. Slide one of the provided bolts through the bracket and shock eyelet and tighten the bolt down. Installing the rear tires Now that the shocks have been placed properly you can install the rear tires, place the tires onto the axle then place the rear rim lined up onto the axle and tighten the provided castle nut down. Place the cotter pin through the axle and bend off to the side. This is so the castle nut does not loosen under load. Installing the seats and harnesses
(The arrow points to an example of where the seat bolts mount) Find the two racing seats shipped in the box with the Cobra. You will need to affix them to the frame by sliding the bolts up through the bottom of the frame. This can be tricky so have patience. Once both seats have been placed in the cart and tightened find the harnesses. Once found the harnesses mount to a bracket behind the seats. Place a bolt through the bracket and bolt the harnesses down tightly. Installing the steering wheel Find the steering wheel and place it onto the steering wheel mount. Grab the six small screws and place them through the steering wheel and mount, tighten them down but also make sure the top of the wheel is facing up. Installing the roll cage

REMOVAL 1. Refer to the owner’s manual and follow the instructions to disarm the security system. To prevent accidental vehicle start-up, which could cause death or serious injury, disconnect negative (-) battery cable before proceeding. (00048a) To prevent accidental vehicle start-up, which could cause death or serious injury, remove main fuse before proceeding. (00251b) 2. For All Models except 2002-2003 Touring and 2003- Later Softail: Refer to the owner’s manual and follow the instructions to disconnect the battery, negative (-) cable first or remove the main fuse. For 2002-2003 Touring and 2003-Later Softail Models: Remove seat following the instructions in the service manual and disconnect the battery, negative (-) cable first. Save seat hardware for installation. INSTALLATION 2002-2006 VRSCA, VRSCB, VRSCD Models 1. Open the seat. 2. See Figure 1. Remove the splash guard (mud flap) nuts. 3. See Figure 2. Lower the mud flap from the installed position and allow it to rest on the rear tire 3. Slide the siren into place on the left side of the electrical caddy so the sounder disc (6) faces out. 4. Refer to the owner’s manual and follow the instructions to install the main fuse. 5. Align the barbed studs on the side cover with the grommets in the frame and push side cover firmly into place. 6. Install the left side saddlebag per the instructions in the owner’s manual. 2003 and later Softail Models EXCEPT FXCW/C 1. Remove the right side saddlebag (if equipped) per the instructions in the owner’s manual. NOTE The siren connector is installed on an electrical panel under the rear fender on all Softail models. The rear of the motorcycle may have to be raised slightly to allow removal of the splash guard. 2. Remove the two bolts at the bottom of the splash guard. Bend the upper right corner of the splash guard toward the rear tire and lift upward to unhook the splash guard from the tab on the rear fork. Remove the siren connector [142B] (2) from the receptacle in the siren mounting area (1) of the electrical panel. 4. See Figure 17. Insert security siren (1) connector [142B] into the siren box receptacle until the connector latches securely. 5. Orient the siren (1) as shown, with the harness connector (2) toward the bottom and the sounder disc (5) facing out. Carefully snap the siren into the electrical panel. 6. Insert the siren harness lead (4) into the harness clip (3) to keep the harness clear of other components. 7. If necessary, secure the connector wiring to the electrical panel wiring with a cable strap (not provided). 8. Hook the slot at the top of the splash guard over the tab on the rear fork and install the guard with the two screws removed earlier. Tighten securely. 9. Install the right side saddlebag (if equipped) per the instructions in the owner’s manual. 10. Cobra CX50 SR is a close-tolerance high performance machine and break- in time is very important for maximum life and performance. The CX50 SR can be ridden hard after the first ½ hour break-in time but it is recommended that no adjustments are made to the carburetion or suspension until the full 8 hours of bike break-in has elapsed. Also, after the engine, transmission, and drive train have been broken-in for the full 8 hours, the bike will be faster! Use a fuel / oil mixture of 32:1 for the full 8 hour break-in period. Be sure to use high-octane pump gas, with Cobra’s specially formulated Cobra Venom 2-cycle Race Oil . (Part # MCMUOL02) CAUTION: Failure to use proper fuel, oil, or fuel/oil mixture may result in premature engine wear or damage to the machine. Adhering to the following break-in schedule will result in long lasting high performance machine. • Start bike on stand • First 5 minute period, operate the bike on the stand with a combination of idle and high RPM operation. (avoid prolonged high RPM but spin the rear wheel good at least once or twice per minute) • Allow bike to cool • Ride for 15 minutes maximum (avoid prolonged high RPM operation and avoid abusing the clutch with throttle blipping. • Cool and inspect bike for loose fasteners. • Next ½ hour of operation, avoid prolonged operation at Wide Open Throttle. • After 1 hour of operation o Check for loose bolts and nuts on the bike and retighten as necessary (proper toque values are listed under Specifications). o Clean the carburetor bowl. o Change the transmission / clutch lubricant. • After 8 hours of operation o Change the fork oil. o Have a Certified Cobra Mechanic change the shock oil. • Your bike is now ready for the highest level of competition! NOTE: During break-in the bike will likely lose some engine coolant through the radiator overflow hose. Losing up to 4 oz (120 ml, ½ cup) is normal. Proper coolant level will cover the top of the radiator cores. Removing the radiator cap and looking inside is the only way to check the coolant level. 8
Never open the radiator cap of a machine that has a hot or warm engine or one that has recently been ridden. Burning and scalding could occur. CAUTION: It is important that the radiator cap is installed correctly and completely otherwise engine damage could occur. Starting Procedure Before starting the machine inspect the following: • Check for proper tire pressure in both tires. • Observe the chain tension and adjust if necessary. • Observe the coolant level and fill if necessary. • Verify that the chain rollers and sliders do not have improper wear. • Verify that the handlebars are tight. • Check the throttle for smooth operation and that it ‘clacks’ shut properly. • Check for loose bolts and nuts, and re-torque as necessary. • Verify that the air filter is clean and properly saturated with oil. • Insure that the fuel tank contains an adequate volume of fuel / oil mixture to complete the distance required. (High octane pump gas with Cobra’s specially formulated Cobra Venom 2-cycle Race Oil ) • Turn the fuel on by rotating the fuel petcock knob to the vertically downward position (reserve position is horizontally forward) CAUTION: For best results from your Cobra Motorcycle use only the recommended fuels. Testing has shown that most ‘race’ fuels actually degrade performance. Always wear a helmet and other protective riding gear. When your pre-ride inspection is complete the bike may be started. For a cold engine follow this procedure. 1. Place the motorcycle on a stand of sufficient strength that positions the motorcycle in a level upright position with the rear wheel off the ground. 2. Pull up the choke knob and turn it to lock it. 3. Kick start the engine. 4. Rev the engine in short spurts, turning the throttle no more than 1/4 open until the engine will run without the choke.

1. Flip up seat, to gain access to radiator reservoir area. 2. Remove Dzus fastener to remove simulated fuel tank cover, over airbox housing. Depending on which model V-Rod is being worked on, the front shrouds covering the upper front frame section may also need to be removed. 3. Place Fi2000 in under-seat area, run fuel injector connector harness up right side frame rail between top right frame rail, and radiator overflow tank, see Figure 1. At the rear of the airbox, route the harness below the airbox, and downward next to the inner radiator hose. Unplug both stock fuel injector connectors, on the front and rear injectors between the engine cylinders, see Figure 2. These are disconnected, by depressing the metal springs that are on the end of each female connector. The stock female connectors are marked “F” and “R”, noting which connector goes to the front and rear injector, be sure to pay attention to this. Now connect the longer male Fi2000 connector to the front female H.D. connector. Plug shorter Fi2000 male connector into the stock rear female H.D. connector. Then plug the longer female Cobra connector onto the front stock H.D. injector. Plug the shorter Fi2000 female connector onto the rear injector. Each injector connector pair should rest underneath each respective injector. 4. It is now time to install the oxygen sensor eliminator modules. This product is designed to eliminate the “check engine” light from coming on when the stock oxygen sensors are disconnected on Harley Davidson Motorcycles utilizing fuel injection. The motorcycle has a full “open loop” fuel injection map written in its ECU and the motorcycle reverts to this default map after the oxygen sensors have been removed or just disconnected. 5. Locate the rear oxygen sensor and follow the harness up to the under-seat area behind the radiator overflow tank. Pull the stock connectors up from below the overflow tank and disconnect, see Figure 1. Plug one of the supplied Oxygen sensor eliminators on to the stock male connector. Tuck the connectors back underneath the bracket behind the radiator overflow tank. 6. Now locate the front oxygen sensor on the front headpipe, and trace the oxygen sensor harness back to the connectors tucked between the left front frame rail and plastic radiator shroud, see Figure 3. Pull these connectors out, and disconnect them. Plug the remaining supplied oxygen sensor eliminator on to the stock male connector. REMOVAL 1. Support the motorcycle so the front end is off the floor and the forks are fully extended. 2. Remove the front fender, front brake caliper(s) and front wheel according to instructions found in the Chassis section of the appropriate service manual. NOTE On some models other parts will also need to be removed to access the front forks. See the service manual. 3. For All Models EXCEPT Touring: Drain and remove the front forks. See the service manual. 4. For Touring models equipped with air-adjustable suspension: Bleed the air-adjustable suspension according to the instructions in the appropriate service manual. Wear safety glasses or goggles when servicing fork assembly. Do not remove slider tube caps without relieving spring preload or caps and springs can fly out, which could result in death or serious injury. (00297a) 5. For 2000 and Later Models EXCEPT Touring: See Figure 1. Using a piece of dental floss (or similar material) in a back and forth motion, loosen reflector from fork slider at both ends. Rotate reflector from side-to-side until it can be removed. Save reflector for future use. See Figure 2. Repeat procedure on the opposite side fork slider. Peel off any excess adhesive from both reflectors . Surface must be clean for installation. 6. Disassemble the front fork tubes according to instructions in the service manual. INSTALLATION NOTES The chrome fork sliders included in this kit install in the same manner as the original equipment parts. Refer to the service manual for proper installation procedures. Prior to installation of this kit, check the bores of the new chrome sliders to be certain they are free of dirt and debris or damage to the new sliders may occur. 1. Assemble the front fork tubes, replacing worn seals, bushings or other items as needed. NOTE Do not use an impact wrench to tighten the drain screws. Use of an impact wrench may damage the screws. 2. Tighten the drain screws: •Early Models with 39 mm forks (see Figure 2): Tighten to 13-17 in-lbs (1.5-1.9 Nm) •Early Models with 41 mm forks (see Figure 2): Tighten to 52-78 in-lbs (5.8-8.8 Nm) •Later Models (see Figure 3): Tighten to 52-78 in-lbs (5.8- 8.8 Nm) 3. Fill with TYPE E FORK OIL (99884-80) according to the instructions in the service manual. 4. Install the front fork and any parts that were removed to access the front forks. Connect the license plate lamp connector following the instructions in the Service Manual. After installing seat, pull upward on seat to be sure it is locked in position. While riding, a loose seat can shift causing loss of control, which could result in death or serious injury. (00070b) 3. Starting Procedure Before starting the machine inspect the following: • Fill the 2-stroke injector oil reservoir with Cobra’s specially formulated Cobra Venom 2-cycle Race Oil . • Insure that the fuel tank contains an adequate volume of fuel to complete the distance required. ( Sunoco MO2X or 93 octane pump gas). • Check for proper tire pressure in both tires. • Observe the chain tension and adjust if necessary. • Observe the coolant level and fill if necessary. • Verify that the chain rollers do not have improper wear. • Inspect the frame for; o Cracks in the metal. o Cracking paint which might indicate overly stressed material. • Verify that the handlebars are tight. • Check the throttle for; o Smooth operation and sound closing. o Frayed strands of the cable inside the throttle housing. • Check for loose bolts and nuts, and re-torque as necessary. • Verify that the air filter is clean and properly saturated with oil. • Turn the fuel on by rotating the fuel petcock knob to the vertically downward position (reserve position is horizontally forward). CAUTION: For best results from your Cobra Motorcycle use only the recommended fuels. Testing has shown that most ‘race’ fuels actually degrade performance. When your pre-ride inspection is complete the bike may be started. For a cold engine follow this procedure. 1. Place the motorcycle on a stand of sufficient strength that positions the motorcycle in a level upright position with the rear wheel off the ground. 2. On the carburetor, flip the black choke knob upward from the right side of the bike. 3. Kick start the engine by kicking the lever forward. 4. Rev the engine in short spurts, turning the throttle no more than 1/4 open until the engine will run without the choke. 5. Verify a functional engine shut-off switch by shutting off the engine. 6. Restart the engine and proceed with riding when the engine is sufficiently warm (i.e. the side of the cylinder is warm to touch). CAUTION: Never rev an engine full throttle when it’s cold or slightly warmed up. Cobra recommends that you tell your child to take it easy the first couple of minutes in practice until the engine comes up to full operating temperature. Make sure your engine is properly warmed up before racing.
