LUBRICANTS DANGER A good lubrication ensures the vehicle safety. Failure to keep the lubricants at the recommended level or the use of a non-suitable new and clean type of lubricant can lead to the engine or gearbox seizure, thus leading to serious accidents, personal injury or even death. Gear oil may cause serious damage to the skin if handled daily and for long periods. Wash your hands carefully after use. Do not dispose of oil into the environment. Take it to the filling station where you usually buy it or to an oil salvage center. WARNING When filling the vehicle with this oil, take care not to spill it out since it could damage the vehicle paint- work. In case of contact with oil, the tyres surface will become very slippery, thus becoming a serious danger for your safety. In case of leaks, do not use the vehicle. Check and trace the cause of leaks and proceed to repair. ENGINE OIL DANGER Prolonged or repeated contact with engine oil may cause severe skin damage. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling engine oil. Do not release into the environment. Dispose of engine oil through the nearest waste oil reclamation firm or through the supplier. Wear latex gloves during servicing FRONT FORK FLUID DANGER Front suspension response can be modified to a certain extent by changing damping settings and/or selecting a particular grade of oil. Standard oil grade is SAE 20 W. Different oil grades can be selected to obtain a particular suspension response. (Choose SAE 5W for a softer suspension, 20W for a stiffer sus- pension). The two grades can also be mixed in varying solutions to obtain the desired response. GENERAL INFORMATION 1 -9 RSV 1000 R – RSV 1000 R FACTORY BRAKE FLUID NOTE This vehicle is fitted with front and rear disc brakes. Each braking system is operated by an independent hydraulic circuit. The information provided below applies to both braking systems. DANGER Do not use the vehicle in case brakes are worn out or do not work properly! The brakes are the parts that most ensure your safety and for this reason they must always be perfectly working. Failure to comply with these recommendations will probably lead to a crash or an accident, with a consequent risk of personal injury or death. A wet surface reduces brakes efficiency.

FUEL DANGER Fuel used to drive internal combustion engines is highly inflammable and may become explosive under certain conditions. It is best to refuel and carry out maintenance in well ventilated places with the engine switched off. Do not smoke during refuelling or near fuel fumes. Avoid all contact with naked flames, sparks, or any other source that may cause ignition or explosion. Also avoid allowing the fuel to spill out of the filler cap as it could catch fire on contact with the very hot surfaces on the engine. Should fuel be spilled accidentally check that the area is completely dry before starting up the vehicle. The fuel expands when subjected to heat or the sun’s rays. The fuel tank should therefore never be filled to the brim. Close the filler cap carefully on completing refuelling. Avoid the fuel coming into contact with your skin, inhaling vapours, ingestion and siphoning from one container to another using a hose. DO NOT DISPOSE OF THE FUEL INTO THE ENVIRONMENT. KEEP AWAY FROM CHILDREN. Only use super lead-free petrol, with a minimum octane rating of 95 (N.O.R.M.) and 85 (N.O.M.M.). WARNING When putting oil into the vehicle be very careful not to spill any. Immediately clean off any spilt oil, otherwise it may damage the paintwork on the vehicle. In addition, any oil that ends up on the tyres will make them extremely slippery, creating a dangerous situation. If an oil leak should arise, do not use the vehicle. Check and identify the cause of the leak and repair the component involved. The viscosity grade may be chosen in relation to the type of set-up you want on the vehicle (SAE 5W soft, 20W rigid). CHANGING ENGINE OIL CAUTION In case of oil leakage or malfunctions, contact an Aprilia Authorised Dealer . Do not dispose of oil in the environ- ment. Dispose of engine oil – stored in a sealed container – through the nearest waste oil reclamation firm or through the supplier. Carefully read page 34 (MAINTE- NANCE) To change engien oil: ◆ Ride for a few kilometres until engine reaches the operating temperature, then stop the engine. ◆ Position a graduated container (1), under the drain plug (2). ◆ Loosen oil filler plug (4) and drain plug (2). ◆ Let oil flow out of the sump. ◆ Loosen oil filter (3) and carefully clean it. ◆ Refit the filter and tighten fully. ◆ Tighten drain plug (2) and pour recommended oil into filler plug (4), see page 58 (LUBRICANT CHART). ◆ Tighten the filler plug. CAUTION Carefully tighten filler and drain plugs and ensure oil does not leak out. Periodically check for leaks at the casing cover gasket. Do not use the vehicle with insufficient lubrication or with contaminated or unsuitable lubricants, since this would cause early wear of the moving parts and may also cause irreparable failures Fluid reservoir (1) is under rear right wheelhouse. CAUTION Position the vehicle on firm and flat ground. ◆ Make sure that the fluid contained in the reservoir exceeds the ” MIN ” mark stamped on the reservoir. MIN = minimum level. WARNING Do not use the vehicle if the braking system is leaking fluid. CAUTION Do not use the vehicle if the fluid is below the “MIN” mark. 1
27 use and maintenance Quasar 50 – 100 – 125 – 180 CAUTION Brake fluid level decreases as the brake pads wear down. Should the level be too low: ◆ Check the brake discs and pads for wear, see page 27 (CHECKING THE BRAKE PADS FOR WEAR) If the pads and/or the disc do not need re- placing: ◆ Contact an Aprilia Authorised Dealer that will top up the fluid. WARNING Check the brake for proper operation. When the brake lever has exceeding travel or if you notice a loss of braking, contact an Aprilia Authorised Dealer . The braking system may need bleed- ing. CHECKING THE BRAKE PADS FOR WEAR Carefully read page 26 (BRAKE FLUID – recommendations) , page 26 (DISC BRAKES) and page 34 (MAINTE- NANCE). Periodically check brake pad wear. The rate at which brake pads will wear depends on vehicle usage, riding style and road surface condition. Outlined below is a quick brake pad inspection procedure: ◆ Visually check between brake disc and pads, check both pads (1) looking from the bottom at the rear end. ◆ Should friction material (of even one pad only) be worn down to 1.5 mm of thickness, have both pads replaced

DISASSEMBLING THE COMPONENTS – Never use pliers or similar tools to slacken and/or tighten nuts and bolts. Always use a suitable spanner. – Mark all connections (hoses, wiring, etc.) with their positions before disconnecting them. Identify each connection using a distinctive symbol or convention. – Mark each part clearly to avoid confusion when refitting. – Thoroughly clean and wash any components you have removed using a detergent with low flash point. – Mated parts should always be refitted together. These parts will have seated themselves against one another in service as a result of normal wear and tear and should never be mixed up with other similar parts on refitting. – Certain components are matched-pair parts and should always be replaced as a set. – Keep the motorcycle and its components well away from heat sources. ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS To disconnect the electrical connector, follow the procedures below. Failure to comply with these procedures may lead to irreparable damages to the connector and the wiring as well. If present, press the special safety hooks. Time and Ease: Easy­ Under 30 Minutes Tools/Supplies: Ratchet w/sockets or wrenches, oil, oil pan, oil filter, rags, funnel Step 1: Put scooter on center stand and allow the engine to cool. Step 2: Unscrew and extract the cap­dipstick (1) . Step 3: Unscrew and remove the engine oil filter (3) . Step 4: Unscrew and remove the oil drain plug (4) . Allow the oil to drain completely. Step 5: Install a new oil filter (3) , being careful to lubricate the O­ring on the filter with oil. Step 6: Tighten the engine oil drain plug (4) . Step 7: Fill through the filling hole (2) with approximately 1.7 L of 5W­40 Synthetic or other that exceeds API ST Specifications. Step 8: Tighten the oil level dipstick (1) . Step 9: Start the engine and let run for a few minutes, Shut it off and let it cool. Check the engine oil level again using the dipstick (1) , and top it off if necessary, without ever exceeding the “MAX” level.
